RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines Athletics Dept., and the Hardrock Club announced the 2012 Hardrocker Hall of Fame class. They are listed below.
Football: Ryan Cadwallader had a great career and one of the most productive years in Hardrocker football history. He holds four receiving records at the School of Mines which were all set during the 1995 season. They include receiving yards in a game (212), receiving yards in a season (1,182), touchdown receptions in a game (4), and touchdown catches in a season (13). His most memorable game was also during the 1995 season. Cadwallader led one of the greatest comebacks in Hardrocker history. Mines trailed Black Hills, 28-6, at halftime, but Cadwallader brought the Hardrockers back with four touchdown catches and a 42-34 victory.
Men's Basketball: Bruce Bad Moccasin was a star on the Hardrocker basketball team from 1967 to 1971. One of the school's most prolific scorers, at the time of his induction, was sixth on the all-time scoring list with 1,720 points. In addition to his basketball success, Bad Moccasin also was a key member of the Hardrocker cross country team -- also coached by his basketball mentor, Jim Kampen.
Women's Basketball: Maria Fossum-Cadwallader was the point guard and floor general for the first Lady Hardrocker basketball team to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament during the 1992-1993 season. She was the first of high-quality point guards who became the staple of Lady Hardrocker teams during the next 15 years. Although she fell just shy of 1,000 career points, she is third in all-time assists with 443, 16th in steals (165) and 18th in 3-pointers (44) and was named the SDIC Conference MVP in 1995. She was a hard working player that excelled both offensively and defensively and the leader of the first national tournament Lady Hardrocker team.
Track: Duane Haugen set a record in the 100-meter dash in 1980 with a time of 10.2 seconds. This mark was the best in this event at any level of collegiate competition in 1980. He ran his record-setting 100 meters at a track meet at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. That time qualified him for the 1980 Olympic Trials, but political events forced the US team to withdraw from competing in the 1980 Olympics and Haugen lost his chance to compete. His record is stilled revered today at Mines.
Team: The Women's Basketball teams of 1978-1979 and 1979-1980 were dominating squads that captured SDIC Conference Basketball Championships with the 1980 team also winning the AIAW State Championship. The 78-79 team finished with an 18-6 record, while the 79-80 team ended 20-9. The teams were coached by Bob Hunt and he remarked, "The Meyer sisters (Kerri and Terri) and Tammy Petersen are the heart of the team." These two teams set the early standard for women's basketball SD Mines.
Builders: Tom and Nancy Oliver have been a part of the Hardrocker Athletic program as "first fans" for more than two decades. They have made it part of their life to attend Hardrocker athletic events and have been very generous with their support of the Hardrock Club Scholarship program. Tom and Nancy have for years mailed game stories to player parents and grandparents and Tom has been a regular in singing the National Anthem at home events. The Hardrocker program has benefited greatly from the support of Tom and Nancy Oliver.
