RAPID CITY --- Two South Dakota School of Mines indoor track records were broken this past weekend at the Chadron State Invite in Chadron, Neb., and the individuals that broke the records gave themselves an opportunity to advance their season to the national level.
Sophomore Jamie Dale (Interdisciplinary Sciences major from Alpine, Calif.) broke his own record in the men's long jump while junior Everett Brill (Mechanical Engineering major from Elko, Nev.) bettered his own mark in the weight throw.
Dale earned second place in the long jump after a leap for 22-feet-8-inches while Brill secured second in the weight throw with a distance of 52-4.
"Everett Brill continues to break his school record and is now two inches from a national automatic qualifying mark," said Hardrocker indoor track head coach Jerry Schafer. "Dale's new record in the long jump is also a provisional mark. Dale is about five or six inches short of an auto."
It was a good meet for the entire Hardrocker squad as a majority of the SDM thinclads delivered their best performances of the season.
"Out of the 32 athletes that we took, 20 improved on their performances this season. We were pleased from that standpoint," Schafer said. "However we could have done better in quite a few places."
Hardrocker highlights, on the women's side included: freshman Lillian Temple (engineering major from Glendive, Mont.) earned second in the women's high jump after clearing a height of 5-3 and teammates Ashley Stewart (senior Civil Engineering major from Scotland, S.D.) tied for third with a height of 5-1 while Madisen Lane (Chemical Engineering major from Fort Collins, Colo.) settled for a share of fifth clearing 4-11; ); Lane also took third in the women's triple jump (32-7.5); the women's 4x400 relay team, consisting of Temple, Kendal Donegan (senior Industrial Engineering major from Colorado Springs, Colo.), Kendra Crisman (junior Interdisciplinary Sciences major from Rapid City, S.D.) and Alexis Godeke (freshman Geology major from Antwerp, Ohio) finished in third place in a time of 4:33.79.
Highlights for the men's team were: Dale took third in the men's 55-meter dash in a quick time of 6.64 seconds; senior Colton Reid (Computer Engineering major from Colstrip, Mont.) earned first in the men's 800 run after clocking a time of 2 minutes and 0.60 seconds while teammate and fellow senior Scott Anderson (Mechanical Engineering major from Huron, S.D.) finished third with a 2:02.66 and junior Lucas Fried (Civil Engineering major from Kodiak, Alaska) came in fourth with a 2:05.76; Fried then took second during the men's mile run with a time of 4:36.11; sophomore Thomas Everett (Geological Engineering major from Missoula, Mont.) took second in the men's 5,000 run clocking a 16:27.44 while teammate Marcus Moor (senior Electrical Engineering major from Kadoka, S.D.) grabbed fourth (16:44.99) and freshman Derek Lovato (Environmental Engineering/Chemical Engineering major from Erie, Colo.) secured sixth (17:04.65 freshman Seth Brotherton (Mechanical Engineering major from Pierre, S.D.) competed well in the men's 55 hurdles taking sixth place in a time of 8.32.
"We are continuing our progress and that is good considering we have one more meet before the (Dakota Athletic Conference meet)," Schafer said. "We have to make sure we are improving going into the conference meet."
The Hardrockers travel back to Nebraska this weekend for the Wayne State Invitational in hopes of further improving their distances and times in order to get good seedings for the DAC meet which is slated for Feb. 20 in Spearfish, S.D.
